The holiday season is a time when most people are looking for the perfect gift to give to their loved ones, their amazing teachers, postal workers, UPS Drivers, and anyone else who is important to them. Oftentimes, people find themselves running out of time and resort to buying last-minute gifts that may not be as thoughtful or special as they had originally planned.
However, there is no need to worry if you are short on time! There are many great essential oil DIY gifts that you can quickly make at home without having to spend a lot of money. In fact, many of these DIY gifts can even be made using ingredients that you may already have in your kitchen.
Essential oils make great gifts because they offer a variety of benefits that can be enjoyed by the recipient. For example, peppermint essential oil is known for its ability to help improve focus and concentration, while lavender essential oil is known for its calming properties. So if you are looking for a last-minute gift that offers something special, consider giving an essential oil item this year!
Essential Oil DIY Gifts Created By Experts
I’ve been making DIY gifts for over a decade, and I love the creativity and flexibility working with essential oils gives me.
Kristie Weibelt out of LA and Jody Simmer from Alaska partnered with me to share our favorite recipes. We put together 6 different recipes, follow along while we make them:
Peppermint Hot Cocoa
Jody shared her Peppermint Hot Cocoa DIY, a cozy last-minute DIY holiday gift for friends and family.
The great thing about this DIY is that it only requires a few drops of peppermint essential oil to give it a wintery festive flavor. Not only does the scent bring up memories of winter holidays spent with family and friends, but it also provides some wonderful health benefits thanks to the potency of the peppermint essential oil.
Think candy canes without the sticky mess!
Peppermint is also known for its many health benefits. It has been used for centuries to help reduce nausea, improve digestion, and ease headaches. It can also stimulate mental alertness and clarity while calming stress levels. Inhaling Peppermint essential oil can be especially helpful in relieving feelings of restlessness or fatigue during seasonal changes or when feeling overwhelmed by holiday tasks.
You can play around with this a bit, adding creamer powder and putting the mix into tins, cookie bags, or silicone zip lock bags for a reusable source like mason jars.
Orange Vanilla Milk Bath Salts
This DIY bath salt blend can be whipped up in minutes and using an ornament can be the cutest gift you give!
If you do not take baths, you can use this for a foot soak, too!
The powdered coconut milk or milk helps create an ultra-smooth texture, while the Epsom salt is rich in magnesium which helps relax muscles and reduce stress. While these salts come with their own health benefits, adding essential oils elevates their therapeutic value even further. You can even add some baking soda to help the water feel more smooth.
Wild Orange essential oil provides an uplifting aroma that is both energizing and invigorating at the same time. It has been known to support mood, dispel negative thoughts, and promote feelings of happiness and contentment. Combined with Madagascar Vanilla essential oil which offers a warm floral aroma that promotes relaxation and provides the chemistry in the body for relaxing, and supporting the body in calming, these two essential oils make the perfect DIY spa treat for the holiday season (and beyond)!
Christmas Cookie Body Scrub
Kristie shares the Christmas Cookie Body Scrub DIY, which is an incredibly luxurious, yet easy DIY to make. And it really does smell like cookies! Exfoliation is an important part of any body care routine, as it helps to remove dead skin cells and other impurities that can accumulate on the skin’s surface.
Regular exfoliation also helps to relieve ingrown hairs while making moisturizing lotion more effective.
Who doesn’t want soft, supple skin?
This DIY uses simple ingredients that you may already have in your kitchen, such as coconut oil and sugar. It is also scented with a few drops of your favorite essential oil - Madagascar Vanilla essential oil.
Not only does Madagascar Vanilla essential oil have a warm, delightful aroma, often used in fragrances, it helps to relax you.
You can also add the Baking Spice essential oil blend. It has Ginger, Cardamom, Cassia, Clove, and Cinnamon with Nutmeg kernel. You need about 8 drops of this and you can drop the Madagascar Vanilla to 4 drops.
Perfect pampering moment!
Lavender Play Dough
Whether you love or hate play dough, you have to admit how fun it can be to play with! But it kind of, stinks, right?
This Lavender play dough is the perfect, homemade answer to that!
Lavender essential oil has long been known for its calming properties, so this DIY recipe is perfect for helping kiddos relax, unwind, and de-stress during the busy holiday season.
I’ve been making this recipe since 2013! If you’re looking to make it a bit smoother, add in a bit more fractionated coconut oil and that will do the trick.
Jingle Bells Ornament Diffuser
Spread the scent of holiday cheer with the Jingle Bells Diffuser Ornament DIY, which can easily be is adapted for Hanukah celebrations as well. While it can be an ornament on a tree, you can also place it anywhere in your home, or gift a felt garland instead!
Here’s why I use Ylang Ylang, Wild Orange, and Peppermint essential oils:
- Ylang Ylang essential oil has a sweet, floral aroma that is known to support reducing stress, anxiety, and depression. It can also be used to promote feelings of joy and optimism. When diffused, Ylang Ylang essential oil helps transform negative emotions into positive ones and can bring about feelings of relaxation and peace.
- Wild Orange essential oil is renowned for its energizing aroma that uplifts the spirit and stimulates mental clarity. This oil is often used to help increase focus and motivation while reducing fatigue. When diffused, Wild Orange essential oil can help create an environment of abundance and positivity.
- Peppermint essential oil has a refreshing, minty aroma that many people enjoy during the holidays. Its invigorating scent helps stimulate alertness and creativity while promoting feelings of energy and increased productivity.
These three essential oils are just some of the many available that offer aromatic benefits that can help improve well-being both physically and mentally. Allowing yourself to take time out from the hustle and bustle of everyday life to embrace the calming effects these oils provide is one way you can share meaningful gifts for others throughout this holiday season!
Want to make it even cuter? Create a felt snowman!
Thread a needle (the larger and thicker, the easier to go through the felt) and pull the needle through the center of each ball, using 3 felt balls per ornament. When you reach the end, finally connecting them, tie a knot on the other side. To give him the perfect snowman scarf, simply added a baker’s twine! You can also use Tacky Glue or hot glue to put these together, too.
Holiday Cheer Room Spray
This spray is made with three essential oils – Peppermint, Wild Orange, and Cypress. All of these oils are known for their uplifting and refreshing aromas that can help put you in the holiday spirit.
You already know the benefits of Peppermint, so I won’t repeat myself, there! Wild Orange essential oil has an energizing citrus scent that can help boost your mood, decrease feelings of sadness or depression, and increase your ability to concentrate and focus on tasks at hand. Lastly, Cypress essential oil provides a fresh woodsy aroma that can help bring about feelings of relaxation, calmness, and grounding when diffused into the air.
You can also use the following doTERRA Proprietary Blends: Holiday Spice, Midnight Forest, Holiday Love, or Holiday Joy! Or use some different single essential oils like Black Spruce, Douglas Fir or Siberian Fir.
Combining these three essential oils into the Holiday Cheer Room Spray creates an aroma that will refresh any room with joy this holiday season! Simply spray it around your space as often as needed – especially when feeling overwhelmed or stressed out during this busy time of year.
